Virtual Reality is no Longer About Big Budgets and Fancy Hardware

Among the innovations at the 2018 World Cup the BBC launched a VR viewing experience. Footy fans looking for an immersive experience can watch games from their own virtual hospitality box in the stadium. At the same time they can enjoy commentary and insights from the BBC match team. All this without expensive headsets or high spec PCs.

Another part of the experience is a dashboard showing live match data. This data isn’t readily available to TV viewers because it would take up most of the screen. VR viewers can glance at it when they like. With VR you can control your viewing experience rather than having it dictated for you by producers and directors.

The app shows how experiences become richer and more personalised once the VR element is introduced. And, the technology couldn’t be more accessible. You can use the app on a smartphone or tablet. Or an inexpensive headset such as Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear will provide the full immersive experience.

The advent of mobile VR has opened the technology to organisations in any sector and of any size.

Even the more upmarket end of VR is becoming inclusive. These days, a dedicated ‘standalone’ VR headset such as Oculus Go can be picked up for under £200 and prices are bound to fall further.

Who’s Using VR?

Many businesses are waking up to both the potential and the affordability of virtual reality. Some of the business processes being transformed by VR include:

  • Product design
  • Procurement
  • Health and Safety
  • Training
  • Sales and marketing
  • Repairs and servicing

Outside of the commercial world the healthcare, tourism and education sectors are all finding novel applications for immersive VR as the costs of entry continue to fall rapidly.

The hardest part is often to see the potential of VR in your business. Which is why AccessVR always takes a business-first approach. Rather than try to find ways that you could use VR we look at your business activities and goals. We then identify practical ways that VR can make you more efficient or offer a measurably better experience for your customers.
